It's been 25 years since the Halliwell sisters put us under their spell. See where Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty and their costars are now
Twenty-five years ago, sisters Piper, Phoebe and Prue Halliwell brought magic to our screens with their WB series, Charmed.
In its initial review, PEOPLE called the show — which starred Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty (plus, later, Rose McGowan) as the bewitching San Francisco-based sisters — "watchable but not spellbinding," though legions of fans were hooked.
As the series celebrates its enchanting milestone, catch up with the stars, then and now.
Holly Marie Combs as Piper Halliwell
Former teen star Holly Marie Combs was best known for her work on Picket Fences when she joined Charmed as middle sis Piper, who has the ability to freeze or heat molecules to (sometimes) explosive results.
"Everybody keeps comparing us to Charlie's Angels, and I'm the one always compared to Kate Jackson," she told PEOPLE in 1998. "That's all right with me."
Once Charmed ended in 2006, Combs bounced between TV appearances and movie roles before landing on Pretty Little Liars. She currently hosts a Charmed rewatch podcast, The House of Halliwell, with costars Drew Fuller and Brian Krause.
Combs, 49, who has three sons with ex-husband David Donoho, wed third husband Mike Ryan in 2019.
Alyssa Milano as Phoebe Halliwell
Also already known to viewers for her work on Who's the Boss?, Alyssa Milano played youngest sis Phoebe, whose powers let her see into both the future and the past, and continued to grow with the series.
In 2021, she opened up about the rumors of disagreements on the set, particularly involving costar Shannen Doherty, telling ET, "I could take responsibility for a lot of our tension that we had. I think a lot of our struggle came from feeling that I was in competition rather than it being that sisterhood that the show was so much about. And I have some guilt about my part in that." She added that she and her castmates continue to keep in touch, despite prior differences.
Milano missed a reunion at 90s Con in Connecticut in March of 2023, though posted a photo of her costars, writing, "This makes me happy for the OG Charmed fans. What a gift!" She did, however, meet up with costar Julian McMahon in September of this year at a different fan event in Paris, much to the delight of fans.
The actress has worked steadily on TV since Charmed, most notably on My Name Is Earl, Mistresses and Insatiable. She was also instrumental in launching the #MeToo movement across Twitter after costar Rose McGowan accused producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault.
Milano, 50 has been married to her second husband, talent agent David Bugliari, since 2009; together, they have two children.
Shannen Doherty as Prue Halliwell
A former teen star like her colleagues, Shannen Doherty had Little House on the Prairie, Our House and Beverly Hills, 90210 under her belt before landing Charmed.
As eldest sister Prue, she could move objects with her mind. Though she eventually moved herself off the show, leaving at the end of season 3.
"There was too much drama on the set and not enough passion for the work," she told ET in 2001. "You know, I'm 30 years old and I don't have time for drama in my life anymore."
She's continued working in movies and television since, joining North Shore, 90210 and Mari-Kari for strings of episodes.
Doherty reunited with the Charmed cast at a 2023 90s Con in Connecticut, recalling how "we're very much about empowering women and empowering women within the show."
Since 2015, Doherty has publicly detailed her breast cancer diagnosis and ongoing treatment, as well.
"Is it all pretty? NO but it's truthful and my hope in sharing is that we all become more educated, more familiar with what cancer looks like," she wrote on Instagram in October 2021. "I hope I encourage people to get mammograms, to get regular checkups, to cut thru the fear and face whatever might be in front of you."
In April 2023, Doherty, 52, announced her divorce from third husband Kurt Iswarienko, whom she'd wed in 2011.
Rose McGowan as Paige Matthews
Rose McGowan entered the series in season 4 as the Halliwells' half-sister Paige, who came with her own set of developing powers. She'd been busy in movies like Jawbreaker, Scream, Bio-Dome and Encino Man prior to joining Charmed.
"It's fun to battle evil," she told PEOPLE in 2002. Plus, on set with her costars, "we make each other laugh," she said.
Following Charmed, she continued working in television and movies, featuring in a series of films for directors Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. But her name became most synonymous with the #MeToo movement after she was one of the first actresses to accuse producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault.
McGowan, 50, was engaged to Marilyn Manson in 2001 and director Robert Rodriguez in 2007, before marrying artist Davey Detail in 2013. In 2016, they divorced.
Julian McMahon as Cole Turner
Before joining Charmed in season 3, Julian McMahon was best known for Home and Away, Another World and Profiler. His role as Phoebe's husband, half-demon Cole, lasted for two seasons.
McMahon and Milano had a reunion at a Paris fan event in 2023, with fans commenting on a selfie of the two, “The best serial couple ♥️,” “Best reunion ever 😍❤️” and “The reunion we all needed ❤️❤️."
The actor has stayed busy in the years since Charmed, jumping right into the Fantastic Four franchise and Nip/Tuck (for which he earned a Golden Globe Award nomination), in addition to Runaways and FBI: Most Wanted.
McMahon, 55, was previously married to Danni Minogue and Brooke Burns, with whom he has one daughter. In 2014, he wed Kelly Paniagua.
Brian Krause as Leo Wyatt
Brian Krause also appeared on Another World in addition to Return to the Blue Lagoon before starring on Charmed as Piper's love interest, Leo.
"To have so many people be like, 'Oh my gosh, Leo and Piper, the greatest love ever,' we would all love a love like that," he told Horror Geek Life in 2023. "No matter what you do, you can't give up on it. I think there were a lot of great messages on Charmed that a lot of shows don't tackle."
Krause, 50, has reunited with his Charmed costars at several conventions through the years, in addition to staying busy on TV.
He was previously married to Beth Bruce, and he has one adult son.
Dorian Gregory as Darryl Morris
Like his costars, Dorian Gregory was busy with television work (most notably Baywatch Nights) before landing on Charmed as friend to the Halliwells, police lieutenant Darryl.
"I loved the way the story was unfolding as far as the duality of the sisterhood bond and finding your way and figuring out what you want," he said on a 2022 episode of the Charmed rewatch podcast, The House of Halliwell. "I loved the newness of it, and the beauty of it, and the chemistry of it."
Gregory, 52, has continued his television work post-Charmed, most recently on Grey's Anatomy and As Luck Would Have It.
