Charlie Sheen's journey to sobriety hasn't been easy, but one moment in his life inspired him to go into recovery.
Charlie Sheen, and the scandals surrounding both his professional and personal life, have become an inseparable element from the actor's career. The Two and A Half Men star has made numerous headlines related to his alcohol and drug addiction, marital problems, as well as allegations of domestic violence. His colorful past has been mentioned so frequently that many forget Sheen's career goes all the way back to the 1980s, with movies such as Platoon and Wall Street.
The star had had a promising acting career before getting himself fired from the set of the successful American sitcom Two and A Half Men, which he had been the face of. Sheen's journey to recovery has been a rough one and regularly reported on. According to Sheen, it took one moment in his personal life to snap him back to reality and get him on the path toward recovery.
Charlie Admitted To The Moment That Changed His Life
Considering Sheen's troubled past, it's become very hard to omit during interviews. When appearing on various shows, the topic gets eventually brought up one way or another. When doing an interview for ITV's Loose Women, the actor opened up about his spirals, as well as his journey to recovery and sobriety.
He also made sure to point out the moment he realized it couldn't go on any longer.
Sheen still wasn't sure how he created such chaos, and how deeply he had fallen into his addiction. The Young Guns star wished someone would have asked him if he needed help, instead of making jokes regarding his behavior, despite regretting many things in the past.
The actor tried defending himself by saying that he "didn't go to prison, and didn't kill anybody." Sheen admitted that every time he tried staying clean, it was thanks to an intervention in the form of a rehab or a detox program.
But, the last time he signed himself into rehab was due to the fact he couldn't get one of his daughters to an appointment, because he was completely wasted.
Yet after he had to call his friend to help him out, Charlie Sheen realized the responsibility that he had for his children and decided to enter treatment.
Charlie explained that the final time he went to rehab, it was quite simply so that he could be a better dad and be there for his kids, even if all they needed was a sober driver to take them places.
Charlie Sheen Has Had A Troubled Personal Life
Charlie Sheen's personal life has been nothing less than chaotic. The actor has been married three times and has five children. Sheen's first marriage with Kelly Preston failed after she was hit by shrapnel from his gun.
Although Denise Richards believed she'd steer him onto a clearer path, violence, alcohol, and drug abuse were to blame for Sheen's divorce with his second wife. The most intense divorce was the third one with his ex-wife Brooke Mueller, who filed a restraining order against the star and took away their twin sons.
It's almost impossible for trouble to leave the star alone. Sheen has blamed his ex Richards, for encouraging their daughter to make money on adult sites. But, at least he's managed to settle a lawsuit that his ex filed for knowingly exposing her to HIV.
Charlie Sheen Had A Long Journey To Sobriety
The Hollywood star's journey to sobriety hasn't been easy. Believe it or not, Sheen has been an active actor for more than fifty years. The abuse of substances met the actor early on, perhaps because he was already exposed to the Hollywood culture through his actor father Martin Sheen, who has always adored his son and supported him through his recovery.
Sheen's past relationships consisted of violent behavior which often led to the actor's arrest and questioning. He was under the influence frequently, which led to incidents such as his gun going off and hitting his ex-wife Preston, getting involved in a prostitution scandal, as well as assaulting his ex-girlfriend Brittany Ashland.
It didn't end there, as Sheen got arrested again in 2009 for assaulting his ex-wife Brooke Mueller, in 2014 for battery of a dental technician, and accused of abuse of his ex-wife Richards in 2016.
In 1998, it went as far, as Sheen suffering a stroke due to an overdose. Twelve years later, Sheen was rushed to the hospital yet again after being found naked and intoxicated in his hotel room. In addition to everything, the star opened up about being HIV positive in 2015, which then led to more acceptance of the illness from the public.
Luck has been on the actor's side, given how Sheen has been offered a role to star in Two and A Half Men's Chuck Lorre's new comedy series, How To Be A Bookie, and has reportedly been sober since 2017.
